Direct answer
What to do when temperatures are rising
When a SubZero is warming, keep doors closed, record both compartment temperatures, photograph every displayed message, and move high-risk food or wine to protected storage. Leave the unit operating only when there is no burning odor, smoke, arcing, repeated breaker trip, or active leak threatening cabinetry or electrical components.
Safety conditions override preservation of evidence
Disconnect power when you smell burning insulation, see smoke or arcing, experience repeated breaker trips, or find water reaching electrical components. Close the water supply when an active inlet leak is present. Otherwise, avoid repeated resets because the running condition, stored error, compressor cycle, and frost pattern can reveal the failure.
- 1Check for immediate hazards. Electrical odor, smoke, arcing, hot wiring, breaker trips, or water near energized parts require shutdown.
- 2Measure, do not estimate. Record the fresh-food and freezer temperatures with a reliable thermometer and note the time.
- 3Protect the contents. Move perishables and valuable wine before opening the doors repeatedly or waiting for service.
- 4Call with complete information. Model, serial, displayed code, noises, leak location, building rules, and access window determine the response.
EC 40 and EC 50 indicate excessive run time
On applicable controls, EC 40 records excessive freezer-compressor run time and EC 50 records excessive refrigerator-compressor run time. Dirty condenser fins, condenser-fan failure, an open door, thermistor error, evaporator airflow loss, defrost trouble, a leak, restriction, or weak compressor can create the condition. The code does not identify one replacement part.
What same-day triage can accomplish
An emergency visit first determines whether the equipment can safely remain operating, whether contents need relocation, and whether a same-visit repair is realistic. Stocked sensors, relays, capacitors, fans, controls, and valves may permit immediate completion, while model-specific evaporators, compressors, glass, or assemblies can require ordering and a scheduled return.
Brooklyn co-ops and condominiums may require a Certificate of Insurance, named additional insureds, freight-elevator reservations, and restricted work hours even during an appliance emergency. Send the building’s sample COI and management contact immediately so access preparation can proceed alongside technical triage.

Emergency repair FAQ
How long will food remain safe?
Food safety depends on measured temperature and time, not appearance or smell. Follow current USDA food-safety guidance and discard food when safe holding cannot be confirmed.
Should I keep opening the refrigerator to check?
No. Keep doors closed and use recorded temperatures to reduce heat and moisture entering the cabinet.
Can a technician enter immediately without a COI?
Only if building management permits it. Many Brooklyn properties require approved insurance documentation before access, regardless of the urgency.
